While wandering the medina, I became obsessed with the doors of Essaouira…

The doors in the medina are mesmerizing. There are so many shades of blue – turquoise, cobalt, royal, sky, cerulean, periwinkle… I can’t stop taking photos of them. They’re so simple and yet each one is so different – so worth taking a moment to look at.

this elaborate ancient door must have been gorgeous in its heyday!

Some are enormously large with a small door in the center and others are only large enough for me and others sharing my tiny height. There are solidly painted doors while others are decorated with designs. Some were more recently painted while others were painted ages ago. The doors might be plain and solid or have planks, panels, brass embellishments, and knockers. They are encased in square archways, rounded archways, and other archways like enlarged key holes. Sometimes the frames are simple and other times they are elaborately tiled or covered with reliefs.

They’re certainly all unique!

I love the two very different sets of doors in this alley: bright blue with lime green interior, and a pair of green and red paneled doors behind a rounded archway.
two sets of doors here, each special in their own way!
two kinds of doors outside the Synagogue of Essaouira (the Star of David can be seen above the open doors leading to the stairs)
ok, these doors aren’t blue but green and gold is a great combination, and I LOVE this archway
three very different doors in a row
These tiny, adorable doors are so beautifully decorated.

This photo almost looks like two photos that have been cut together, but these two doors can really be found next to one another.

I thought the doors were interesting enough to be worth mentioning – what do you think? Have you traveled to other places which also had amazing entry ways?

Let me know what you think!
